Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren's chief of executive officer and the man being groomed to take charge by current team chief Ron Dennis, revealed Hamilton made the claim when he first set eyes on the team's new car in January. He said: "Lewis told us several weeks ago that we had given him a car with which he could win in Australia. And as it turned out, he was absolutely right." "He is very comfortable with our MP4-23 car. We knew we had a good basis from the moment we launched it in early January, and we have improved it progressively throughout the winter tests." "From last season we wanted to retain our ability to extract first-lap performance, but we were also aware of the need to find a way to preserve over tyres better than we did. We made good progress there." March 18th, 2008 |
