Formula One is bracing itself for another outbreak of pit-lane warfare if Ferrari fail to hit back at Lewis Hamilton and the McLaren team in this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix. Subscribe to our free RSS News Feed and get all the latest F1 news headlines as they happen. |
Hamilton races into the second round of the world championship at the Sepang circuit buoyed not only by his victory in Australia but also by the failure of defending holder Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari in Melbourne last week. While Hamilton started from Pole position, Raikkonen was 15th on the grid - and the Finn's race ended when his engine failed. An inspection back at Ferrari's headquarters revealed the engine may have been incompatible with the special Electronic Computer Unite (ECU) introduced by Formula One this term by the FIA. Each car is now fitted with the same ECU which allows FIA to check that no team is cheating. The twist is that the ECU has been developed by Microsoft and Mclaren Electronic Systems, a division of the McLaren Group that also runs the McLaren F1 Team. Their involvement is fuelling the tension that still exists following the Spygate scandal in which McLaren were last year found to be in possession of secrete Ferrari data. There is n suggestion of foul play by McLaren. But while every other team appeared to have got to grips with the ECU, Ferrari are wondering why they struggled. Team manager Stefano Domenicali admitted: We still have to understand the ECU in full." March 20th, 2008 |
